IAN CHAPMAN ARTIST

My Story

Picture
Born in Manchester in the middle of the 20th Century I feel fortunate to have been brought up in a stable family environment and the benefit of a good early years school education. My fortune continued on being accepted by the Manchester High School of Art - the first specialist focused state secondary school in the UK. From there I went on to 'art college' in London; initially at Hornsey College of Art (now Middlesex University), then gaining acceptance to Chelsea School of Art (now part of the University for the Arts London) for post-graduate sculpture studies.

Remaining in London I converted an abandoned warehouse into my studio and home at Butlers Wharf - next to Tower Bridge in the declining docklands of the River Thames - establishing my fine art based practice and partaking in numerous group exhibitions whist fulfilling various part-time, visiting, and incrementally substantial lectureship and management roles in the HE sector. During which time I also authored articles and literary reviews; along with developing  an 'alter ego'  as a stand•up comedian, MC, DJ, and impresario. After some fifteen years in London, I relocated  to Oxfordshire to take up the post of Visual Studies lecturer and curriculum leader at Rycotewood College, Thame  - whist sustaining my various visual, creative and performing arts activities.

After a 20 year career in university senior management, inclusive of posts held in Devon, Oxford, Cambridge, Reading and Bedfordshire I now live and work in Norwich and have returned exclusively of full-time art practice (since which time I have exhibited in group shows at the Anteros Gallery (May 22) , the 2022 Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios Preview Exhibition (August 22) , the Shoe Factory (Sept 24), a two person exhibition at the Anteros Gallery, Norwich (Secular Art from Sacred Roots :  May 25), and a group exhibition at The Ballroom Arts Gallery, Aldeburgh (... such stuff as dreams ... :  September 25)
